How To Include Video With Skins For Desktop And Tablet

This article explains how to include Addroid video to enhance desktop and tablet skins.

How To Include Video With Skins For Desktop And Tablet

Site skins are popular ways to make a high impact branding experience for awareness campaigns.  Skins are most often composed of several components:

  • Static (JPG) assets for right and left gutters
  • Static (JPG) asset for header background
  • Overlay (HTML5/Addroid) unit for billboard position
  • Tracking ads (1x1s, click trackers, transparent banners)

Some partners offer tablet skins as well, which are often composed of only a static (JPG) header / background unit and occasionally a footer banner (728x90).  Some partners use transparent banner units (PNG) to create clickable areas over header sections as well.

Methods For Including Video

Including video in a skin execution can be done in several ways:

  1. Overlay a standard video banner (progressive) unit
  2. Overlay a custom video banner with blended endframe
  3. Overlay a custom video element with transparent area

Methods #2 and #3 above require more detailed creative, but offer the most impactful approach.  Below are two example videos of the custom methods.

  • Sample video of a custom 970x150 video banner with blended endframe.  The entire 970x150 area is clickable.
  • Sample video of a custom 970x150 video element with partial transparency.  The entire 970x150 area is clickable, although only a portion of the area shows video.

Method #2 above can be achieved using a standard Addroid banner unit with custom designed creative.  The recommended practice is to create the skin assets, deliver to the publisher, then adjust the Addroid unit using the Live Sync feature on the live publisher test page.

Method #3 above can be achieved using an Addroid Video Element as described in further detail here.

Tablet Considerations

Tablet skins are often simplified for faster loading and smaller screen sizes.  This typically means the header video unit is not needed, and instead a video banner will run elsewhere on the page or as an anchored "catfish" unit in the footer.

For tracking purposes, publishers often request transparent banners to run over the header skin area.  In this case, the media team will need transparent PNGs to setup as creatives in their ad server.  Provided below are several sizes of transparent PNG units to use for ad server creatives (also see Attachment section at the bottom of this page).

Trafficking Considerations

Desktop and tablet skins are often sold as a single line item, and when trafficking device targeting is needed to ensure the proper creative is served to each device.

A common scenario is when a 970x150 or 970x250 video unit runs on desktop over the header, but only a static unit is allowed in the tablet header.  In this case, the Addroid 970x unit is setup as Ad #1 in the ad server, and a static 970x creative (see above) is setup as Ad #2.  Both Ads are included under the same Placement, with Ad #1 targeted to desktop, and Ad #2 targeted to tablet.

Below is a screenshot from DoubleClick Campaign Manager showing a single Placement with two Ads, one targeted to desktop and one to tablet:
